Founded in Seoul in 2011 by Hankook Kim, Gentle Monster disrupted the eyewear industry by transforming glasses into a high-concept fashion statement. The brand was established with a philosophy of "high-end experimentation," creating oversized, sculptural frames that initially catered to Asian facial structures before gaining global appeal. Gentle Monster is defined not only by its futuristic and often unconventional eyewear but also by its unique retail strategy. Each flagship store is a destination in itself, designed as an immersive art installation with evolving themes and kinetic sculptures, blurring the line between commerce and gallery. This approach creates a narrative-driven experience that extends to its product launches and digital campaigns. The brand has cultivated a cult following through high-profile collaborations with fashion houses like Maison Margiela and Moncler, and K-pop icons like BLACKPINK's Jennie, which amplify its cultural relevance. Its designs are favored by international celebrities, cementing its status as an influential force in modern eyewear. Parent company IICOMBINED also operates the cosmetics brand Tamburins and the dessert brand Nudake, often housed together in concept stores like Haus Dosan, further solidifying Gentle Monster's identity as a creative lifestyle collective. The brand rarely offers discounts, maintaining an air of exclusivity and focusing on limited-edition releases that often sell out quickly.
