Founded in 1949 in New York City by Bob Weinstock, Prestige Records stands as one of the most historically significant independent jazz labels in American music. Originally established to document the cutting-edge sounds of modern jazz, the label captured the transition from bebop to hard bop, and later became a pioneering force in soul jazz. Weinstock, a teenage record store owner turned entrepreneur, adopted a famously laissez-faire production approach—favoring informal "blowing sessions" that allowed musicians to play freely. This spontaneous environment, combined with the engineering brilliance of Rudy Van Gelder, yielded some of the most revered recordings of the 1950s and 1960s.
