Founded in 2019 by Chinese designer and Parsons MFA graduate Rui Zhou, RUI explores the nuanced relationship between the body, fabric, and space. Operating between Shanghai and New York, the brand is defined by a philosophical approach to fashion, drawing from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi to find beauty in imperfection and fragility. Zhou’s designs treat clothing as a second skin, using signature elastic knits, strategic cut-outs, and delicate pearl details to create garments that are both revealing and protective. The pieces often blur the line between lingerie and outerwear, challenging conventional ideas of dress with a raw, poetic sensibility.
