Founded in 1990 by Jun Takahashi, a former punk band vocalist, Undercover is a defining force in Japanese fashion that masterfully blends subversion with elegance. From its origins in the influential Ura-Harajuku streetwear scene of the 1990s, the brand quickly gained a cult following for its motto, “We make noise, not clothes,” and a design approach described by Takahashi as “strange, but beautiful.” Under the mentorship of Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo, Undercover debuted in Paris in 2002, cementing its place on the global stage. The brand is celebrated for its meticulously crafted garments that channel punk and pop culture through an avant-garde filter, seen in its deconstructed tailoring, cinematic graphic prints, and surreal runway concepts. Undercover’s collections are narrative-driven, often drawing inspiration from films, music, and art, which results in pieces that are both intellectually engaging and wearable. Signature items include intricately detailed outerwear, graphic t-shirts, and unconventionally tailored separates. The brand has engaged in numerous high-profile collaborations with partners like Nike, Valentino, and Supreme, broadening its reach while maintaining its disruptive spirit. Today, Undercover continues to operate at the intersection of high fashion and street culture, respected for its conceptual depth and commitment to a unique, rebellious vision.
