Vitra is a Swiss family-owned furniture company founded in 1950 by Willi and Erika Fehlbaum. The brand’s trajectory was defined in 1953 when the founders discovered the work of Charles and Ray Eames in New York and secured the licenses to produce their designs, along with those of George Nelson, for the European market. This decision established Vitra as a key conduit for American modernism and set a course for a company culture built on collaboration with visionary designers, whom Vitra refers to as “authors.” The brand’s own design legacy was cemented with the 1967 launch of the Panton Chair, the first-ever single-mold plastic cantilever chair, which became an icon of 20th-century design.
