Since his Paris debut in 1981, Yohji Yamamoto has been a pivotal figure in fashion, celebrated for his avant-garde and intellectual approach to design. Raised by his dressmaker mother in post-war Tokyo, Yamamoto initially pursued a law degree before dedicating himself to fashion, a background that instilled a rebellious and protective vision in his work. His aesthetic is defined by a predominantly black color palette, which he describes as "modest and arrogant at the same time," serving as a canvas for his focus on silhouette and form. Yamamoto’s designs reject conventional, body-conscious Western styles in favor of oversized, layered, and often asymmetrical garments that create space between the fabric and the wearer, an approach rooted in the Japanese concept of “Ma.”
